QXP 9/10 installation or reactivation help

Postby giveuspaws » 19 Jun 2016, 21:47

I’ve read the FAQs about installing and transferring QXP but I’m still not sure how to proceed. Over the past 10+ years I have purchased QXP v. 6, 9 and 10 (v. 10 as part of the “buy 9 and get 10” offer). That's over $1000 of software so that I can work at home.
My QXP 6 license is on a 2007 Macbook which I hardly use, and QXP 9 is on a MacMini.
I recently upgraded the OSX on the MacMini to El Capitan. This is now my backup computer.
I bought a new Macbook Pro at the end of last year, intending to transfer QXP 9 to it. I could probably use QXP 10 installed on it but am more familiar with v. 9.
According to my account, the serial numbers for QXP 6 and QXP 9 have a void status and I don’t know what that means.
I tried to install QXP 10 on the new laptop and got a message about installation failure. I think v. 10 may be registered to the MacMini.
Can I install both v. 9 and 10 on the laptop? I need some version on the MacBook Pro soon and would prefer v. 9 because I have work pending and I’m only using the MacMini as backup –- it’s not as portable.
Do I need to buy a support incident to get this straightened out?

Hi Paws,

that's hard to answer without knowing what kind of system you are using and what error message you see exactly.

Some info points:
  • "Void" means that you cannot use that license anymore to upgrade (as you already used it to buy an upgrade)
  • Quark doesn't disable serial numbers, so you can use your license as long as you want and as long as you have an environment where they run on
  • On older versions there's no support technical available anymore. We do still help with activation issues for versions that have reached their end of live, which currently is QuarkXPress 9 down to version 5. However you need to purchase a single support ticket. For versions that are supported (currently version 10, 2015 and 2016) there's no fee for activation issues.
  • Since version 7 you can deactivate a license on your computer yourself, using a menu in QuarkXPress and then activate it on another machine. Since version 7 we offer dual-activation, cross platform, so you can activate each license on two machines.
  • Older versions of QuarkXPress might not be supported on newer versions of OS X and Windows. So if you are trying to run an unsupported combination of QuarkXPress and operating system, you are on your own as we didn't test that. And it might work or might not work. Workaround: Keep the old machine or virtualize the operating system.
Does that make sense?

Thanks
Matthias

Thank you, that makes sense now. I can have a dual activation of QXP 9 on my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.11.5) and my MacMini (updated to El Capitan) but if I have a problem activating it I will have to pay a single support fee. Version 9 has been working fine on the Mac mini since updating the OS, so I will keep it as backup but I'm not ready to install QXP 10 yet. Once I finish this project I'll be ready to consider it more thoroughly.

Hi Kenken,

we have stopped selling QuarkXPress 9 a while ago, so not sure where you bought it. If you bought it on the gray market, it could be a license that was voided due to various reasons.

Give us a call please and we can tell you what the license is and what options you have:

Thank you for replying , When I register direct on line with the serial number, I receive an authorisation code, but when I enter it its not accepted, surely the product dispite originally being purchased direct from quark, it should be re-usable either to load onto a new computer or a new user. check the serial number U1763691927 you will find its bona fide. I appreciate the version is not now supported for downloads etc, but if I'm restricted to 9.5 capabilities and I'm happy to do so, why would quark upset a potential new customer should I wish to upgrade in time.

Well thank you for all your help , I don't think, ...... it seems to me once these software companies get your money
they do their damest to restrict what you do with your own product, just money grabbing baskets to say the least.

Hi kenken,

all software has its End-Of-Life (EOL). End-Of-Life means that it is not being developed further AND that we do not give offical support anymore. Of course the software will continue to run if you do not change anything in its environment (like upgrading your OS), we have a few customers still using version 6.

For QuarkXPress EOL has happened for versions 9 and before. Quark officially supports the current version plus two recent versions, so currently versions 10, 2015 and 2016.

Since version 7 you can deactivate and activate yourself. If something goes wrong or for older versions , down to version 5 I believe, we still offer activation support. However activation support for versions having hit EOL we do not free help of charge but for a small, single incident fee of maybe $30. Therefore I asked you to call and my colleagues can help you then.

Thanks
Matthias

Matthias,

Please help me understand. Are you saying that if I rebuild my system or if I need to do a fresh install of Quark 9 (because it is running poorly) my current serial number and validation number will not work and I will have to pay Quark to get a new validation number?

Regards,
Firelight

Hi Firelight,

you can deactivate your activation yourself, using the menu inside QuarkXPress. Then reinstall QuarkXPress and activate again, no need for help by Quark for either step.

Only if you can't get it activated yourself, then we offer help for activation for a single incident fee (for products that have reached their end of life that is, so QuarkXPress 9 and below).

Thanks
Matthias
