Installed fonts not appearing in list

Postby jgold723 » 24 Aug 2016, 11:23

I have at least one font (Univers 75 Black) that I can see in Font Book and validates fine, but is not appearing in the Quark font menu. What's up? How do I get this to appear?

I ran into this issue doing a catalog a few years ago. In a small part, it is an issue in the internal naming of the Univers font family and how each family member is identified as Normal, Bold, etc. I think the largest fault is that Q does not iterate the individual fonts within a family (say like ID). QXP uses the OS to query the font subsystem whereas ID bypasses the OS and uses its own font information. But Q needs to do a better job of this.

Say you have Univers 55, 65 and 75 loaded. Now make the body text 55. I would naturally believe that hitting Bold (in ID or Q) would use the 65, which is identified as Bold. But both applications use 75, which is Black.

In any case, I don't know which other Univers fonts you have loaded, but with 55 loaded as the body text, it takes using the bold attribute for 75 to be used in Q.
