Can't get Quark 10 to launch

Can't get Quark 10 to launch

I finally updated to OSX Mavericks and figured it was time to try Quark 10. (I'm very slow to adopt updates, figuring it if ain't broke, don't fix it.)

Every time I try to open version 10, it crashes, telling me "This version of “XPress Preferences” is incompatible with this version of QuarkXPress. [86]"

I'm unable to locate any XPress Preferences on my computer. I just downloaded a couple of the updates hoping that would fix the problem, but no such luck. I've been reading here about people having to go through some sort of ordeal moving fonts around, but that just seems crazy and incredibly time consuming. Surely there must be a way to make this work properly!

Do I need to download the most recent update or what?

I just tried to include the crash report but it makes this message exceed the number of allowed characters. Are there parts of the report I can delete?

About Mavericks, in the past Apple only supported the most recent and the previous two operating systems. With Sierra (10.12) now out and assuming that Apple will continue this policy, Apple probably will not patch Mavericks (10.9) anymore. So I strongly advise you to use at least Yosemite (10.10).

Preferences are here: /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/Quark/QuarkXPress 10/
Easiest is if you hold the Option Key and use the menu "Go > Library" in Finder. Delete everything in the folder "QuarkXPress 10" mentioned above.

And yes, please use the latest version of QuarkXPress 10, as we have put a lot of fixes into it:

I'll try that. Your link says that I need version 10.5 in order to update to 10.5.2. Is that correct?

I don't know whether Yosemite is available anymore. Updates make me very nervous! I can no longer afford to get multiple software updates for the applications I use regularly.

Well, I emptied that library folder and at least got the program to launch, but now it's trying to set up and I need a serial number in order to get the validation code! I can't get the serial number since the program isn't yet set up! My Quark 9 serial number doesn't work.

Hi luzeelu,

you must have deleted more than just the content of the "QuarkXPress 10" folder in preferences, as typically when you delete preferences the activation is untouched.

Does everything work now as expected?

I think that's all I deleted but I believe it's working now. Haven't had the nerve to depend on it just yet. Also haven't yet downloaded the latest update but will do so soon.
