Where to find the "minus" sign (not on your keyboard!)

Postby Matthias Guenther (Quark) » 09 Sep 2014, 04:28

Hi all,

it's strange, isn't it? You use the "minus key" on your keyboard and what do you get? A hyphen.

Typography tip:
So how to enter a correct "minus symbol"? Surprisingly neither Mac nor Windows have a direct way to enter it, you need to reference it by its unicode value, 2212 (in QuarkXPress you can simply use the glyph palette and make a favorite out of it).

The correct minus sign has the same width as the plus sign and is also on the same height (from baseline) as the plus symbol. A hyphen is much shorter and higher.

If your font doesn't have a proper minus symbol or it takes you too long, rather use the en-dash, it's almost the width of a plus symbol and just a bit higher.

Regards
Matthias

P.S.: Please note that the proper minus sign is non-breaking by default, another plus, eh, minus ;) .

That is strange. I never noticed that.
And now that you pointed it out, I'm going to drive everyone crazy by correcting all of their improperly-sized minus symbols.

Hi shaharaperil,

terrible, isn't it?

I have that too, e.g. in German possessives are not marked with an apostrophe like in English (and no confusion possible, as typically German doesn't have a plural 's', foreign words being the exception).
So you should write "Quarks Forum" in German and not "Quark's Forum" as in English. As English is globally very much spread, more and more Germans use the apostrophe s and I always have to hold myself back... ;-)

Cheers
Matthias
