IMPORTANT: Use this FIX for Windows 10 with QX2015/2016

Postby Matthias Guenther (Quark) » 18 Apr 2017, 08:08

Hi all,

the newest update for Windows 10 – automatically distributed by Microsoft last week – has a huge impact on QuarkXPress 2015/2016:
Most file operations (like OPEN and SAVE) do not work anymore.

So if you are on Windows 10 and are using Update 1703 (Creators Update) or plan to use it, please apply this registry patch.
Microsoft supplied us the patch and it is described here:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt765152.aspx

You can apply this registry switch manually or use following instructions:

How to apply the registry patch for Windows 10
  1. Prerequisite Check:
You ONLY need to do this if you are using QuarkXPress 2015 or 2016 on Windows.
And only if you are using Windows 10.
(Windows 7 and 8 are not affected and also not QuarkXPress 10 or before).
  2. Always have a current backup available.
  3. Download the following ZIP file: http://www.quarkforums.com/resources/Wi ... xx_Fix.zip
  4. Right-mouse-click to UNZIP. This will unzip a file called "Win_10_1703_QuarkXPress Fix.txt"
  5. Double-click to verify that the file has the following entry:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework]
    "UseLegacyJit"=dword:00000001

(if you see any other text, please do not apply the patch and contact us at support@quark.com)
  6. Close your Text Editor and rename the file to "Win_10_1703_QuarkXPress Fix.reg"
(so change only the file extension from ".txt" to ".reg" please)
(The reason for the "rename" is to protect you in case somebody hijacked the link and provides you with a dangerous registry change)
  7. Double-click the .reg file to install the patch and accept the warning.

Now QuarkXPress 2015/2016 should work on Windows 10 Creators Update without any issues or restrictions. You might have to reboot your machine first.

Thanks
Matthias

P.S.: We also have a patch available that doesn't involve a registry change. If you prefer that, please contact me via private message.

Hi all,

Microsoft just told us: "On our side we have the fix put in the servicing branch and we discussing when this will be available for Win10 customers. So yes, we are treating this as a significant bug and are actively working to get the fix out as quickly as we reasonably can."

So, though I do not have a date yet, good news is that you will this fixed by Microsoft soon.

Thanks
M.

Hi Matthias

I encountered the Windows 10 problem on Quark 2015 yesterday following a Windows update and the problem has been more or less resolved with the patch fix that you have offered, so thanks for that.

The one remaining issue is that I have been working away for many months without any font problem at all but following yesterday's Windows update my Type 1 Postscript fonts are no longer visible in any open document... the text boxes look empty but if I make a PDF of a job with one then the fonts are still there. The fonts are visible in the Measurements tool bar and also in the Style/Fonts drop down menu. They are just not visible in an open file.

Is there any easy way of getting these fonts to be visible again in a project?

Regards

Hi Mincerkelly,

if I remember correctly, it has to do with Font Caches and is independent of the other issue.

Please delete font cache and try again.

Thanks
Matthias

Hi Matthias

Thanks for that.
Not having deleted the Font Cache before can you please advise where to locate it and delete it?

Thanks

Hi Matthias

I found out how to empty the fonts cache and did a restart but it still hasn't fixed the font problem.
I tried looking at Type 1 fonts in InDesign on my PC and they work fine in that programme.

Any ideas?

Hi Mincerkelly,

you can't use InDesign as a comparison here, as Adobe uses their own font technology and not the operating system.

Please have a look here: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=29245&p=126391#p126391

Thanks

Hi Matthias

Sorry, but none of the suggestions in the link worked for me.
It is definitely an issue with Windows and the operating of Quark so fiddling with removing hundreds of duplicate fonts that have worked perfectly before now is not feasible.
Please advise if a fix will be issued shortly between Microsoft and Quark.

Thanks

Hi Mincerkelly,

as we cannot reproduce this, it's not possible to make any comment on a potential fix.

I'll get a technician to reach out to you, so that we can try to reproduce.

Thanks
Matthias

Hi Matthias

The problem is still there and you said a technician would contact me to try resolve the problem but so far... no contact from Quark.
Having checked further into the problem I can tell you that it is not necessarily a duplicate Type 1/TrueType issue here. Nearly all of my Type 1 fonts do not work now at all, even if there is no duplicate font. Could it have something to do with how old the Type 1 font is?

I find myself working more and more with InDesign as all my fonts work perfectly in that prog still, but I much prefer using Quark.
Please see if a fix can be developed soon.

Thanks
