Saving file takes minutes

Postby niztron » 10 May 2016, 20:05

I recently upgraded from 8.5 to 10, then found 10 to be unworkable (different issue to this one), so I jumped to 2015. Both 10 and 2015 suffered from the same issue though, brutally slow saves for longer documents. I have some docs which are pushing 700-900mb in file size since the upgrade. We save everything to a Synology NAS on a dedicated gigabit network only used by 2 machines and the NAS. We have had no issues in the past saving files in reasonable times. Even working on massive illustrator files with embedded images, no speed issues at all.

But for Quark it takes about 5-7 minutes to save my largest file. These files were created originally in 8.5, so im not sure if that has anything to do with it. We also use EPS imaging, not TIFs. I can split these files if needed, but I fail to see why I should have to since 8.5 handled these files fine.

Any tips to speed up saves?

Could you please provide these details:
1. OS Version?
2. QuarkXPress Version? (Latest is 11.2.0.2)
3. Are Save operations any faster if you save the file on Desktop?

1. 10.10.5 Yosemite
2. 11.2.0.2
3. Saving 561mb document to NAS: 3mins 38 seconds.
Saving same document to desktop: 3mins 42 seconds.

NAS box is a Synology DS213+ connecting over AFP.

Given the test results, this is nothing to do with the NAS.

I have experienced the same thing since upgrading to 2015. My files are not as large (they run about 250mb) and the save isn't quite as long (a minute or two), but the process is still much, much slower than it was under QX9.

I have found that the first save upon opening the document is the slowest -- subsequent saves are quicker (although far from speedy).

I'm using a Macbook Pro, Yosemite 10.10.5, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 with 16GB ram. I'd be glad to share my document if that would help.

I'd love to see a solution for this.

Sarbjit,

Further testing on my behalf on this issue has found that the issue may be the result of documents created in earlier versions of Quark.

I created a brand new blank Quark 2015 file and copied and pasted all my content across from the older document (even though that document had been saved as a Quark 2015 file). The result was an identical file in both content and file size, but the save times were dramatically different:

Older Quark File saved as Quark 2015: 1 min 47 seconds.
Brand new Quark file with content copied in: 40 seconds.

Im happy enough to copy all my old content into new documents to resolve the issue, but I thought it might be worth posting here in case others come across the problem, or if Quark should feel the need to fix it.

This is officially unbearable. Even with the resaving from a completely new file these documents still take well over 2-3 minutes to save and are also unbearably slow to open. Its at the point now where learning indesign from scratch is faster than the lost efficiency of continuing to use Quark.

Farewell Quark, I have known thee well. RIP 1997-2015.
