we never created a patch for QuarkXPress 9. In QuarkXPress 9 the Product Manager decided to just "hide" the functionality and gave out a small digital token to re-enable it. The idea was to find out how many people ask for this. It wasn't many.
Therefore back then the decision was made to not implement "host-based separations" in the new, modern output and graphics engine in QuarkXPress 10. So it wasn't removed, it wasn't implemented.
As we heard several people asking us about it, when we started fresh we asked all our customers about introducing host-based separations in a newer version of QuarkXPress. In both surveys it landed somewhere in the last ranks.
Therefore – and as the world has already recommended composite workflows for a decade or more and most people use PDF-based workflows – we have not made the decision to re-introduce that, though I can see valid workflows and reasons to use this still in 2016.
And using Acrobat it is easy to do with QuarkXPress 2015/2016.
