Size of PDF files

Postby G.E.R.R.Y. » 18 Jan 2016, 09:14

When I export a book or other QXP document to PDF, the file is always 3 to 10 times the size of the same PDF file opened in and saved by Preview on a Mac. For instance, the cover for the book I just finished for a friend is a 46.6MB PDF file exported from QXP 2015. When I open that file in Preview and then save it, it becomes only 4.9MB. Does anyone know why the huge discrepancy? Will the smaller file be inferior in any way?

Actually the PDF files constitute a rich diversity, they can conform to different standards. The PDF file made for print can be often large enough because of the rich information it contains.
So, what kind of PDF doyou intend to get, fos screen, for an office printer, for press? What options did you use for exporting the QuarkXPress layout to a PDF file?

I usually use the bigger PDF generated by QXP for a self-publishing print office and the smaller PDF for the author to see via Dropbox. The only option that I use is to include blank pages.

The size of the exported PDF file depens on what kind of preset you are choosing. Also, for each preset there are further options which can make a smaller or a bigger file. Please see the attached images.
