Transparency problem

Postby jgold723 » 26 Oct 2017, 11:32

I had a recent issue with transparency in a PDF file that I had imported into my document (which was then exported to PDF for printing). The transparency ended up as shaded boxes behind text and images.

I had set transparency to be flattened in the PDF I created, but it apparently skipped that in the imported PDF file.

My printer told me that "Quark doesn't handle transparency well."

While I'm certainly not trying to start a back and forth on the issue, I would like to know how to deal with imported files (PDFs) that have transparency in them. Any suggestions? Is there an Xtension that handles this? Should I preflight every PDF I import (I hope note, as I import hundreds into the document).

Thanks,

John

Which version of QuarkXPress are you using?

Thanks

Hi John,

QuarkXPress 2016 and 2017 handle transparency well, if you chose the right output settings.

So let me understand:
- You import PDFs with live transparency
- You want to flatten the PDFs upon output
Correct?

And how do you create PDF, using PDF Export in QuarkXPress?
And what export settings do you use please?

Thanks
Matthias

You are correct Matthias.

We export using the Quark Export > PDF and a set of PDF specifications provided by our printer. Transparency is set to "Flatten Transparency". I've attached a screenshot of that particular dialog and I'd be glad to provide other settings if that will help.

Resolution might be a bit low, maybe you should increase it to 450 or 600 ppi.
Do you compress the output?

Can you also share a screenshot of the effect (error) you see?

Thanks
Matthias

Hi Matthias:

Screenshot attached. You can see the partially opaque white box behind the logo. We get that effect behind everything on this particular advertisement that has transparency.

These are the same settings that we've used on hundreds of documents, so I'm a little mystified. This particular PDF file (an ad) was not flattened prior to placement, but we've had others from this same designer and I'm guessing they may not have been flattened either.

looks like color spaces are mixed in the original pdf, or mis-handled conversion going on downstream. If you can use Acrobat Pro's Colour convert to get ALL color spaces to cmyk before flattening or importing to quark?
Matthais, I bet there are tools in the Callas Tools freebie that sort this out.
