I am trying to make a table of contents with only the headline of the chapter. The way I do it guided by videos also add a bunch of other texts ... how can I do it with just the headline.

Are you using a paragraph style for your headline and only using it on paragraphs that need that headline style?

And then are you making a List using only that headline style?

I am making layout and a bit of editing of a book for a Ngo on my free time and I am not an experienced QX user. So I have imported a text with a number of chapters and a toc without page numbers. So what I want to do is to have a toc without a summary of the beginning of the chapter, but with page numbers (automatically).
So if I can get help to do that I would be very grateful.

If the text (presumably from Word?) already had a TOC, there is no live link to the text.

For a TOC to work automatically, it is based upon text styles. For a TOC to only show say a Heading style, that Heading style has to exist and be applied to only a paragraph that should use that style.

Then once the text is all appropriately styles with paragraph and/or character styles, you need to use what Q calls a List. (Lists have uses besides TOCs.)

That List needs to then use the Heading style (or whatever text style you want to use in the TOC). Using Windows, to access the List palette, you either open Lists from the Edit menu or open the palette from the Window menu. Then you need to make a new list.
