QXP 2017 LetterPair Kerning Keyboard Command Change

Postby grafiksol » 14 Jul 2017, 15:06

I have noted a significant change in the keyboard shortcut(s) used to increase or decrease letter pair kerning...and regret the change is questionable at best. The details...
For as long as I can remember, all QXP version prior to 2017 used the same keyboard commands to change letter-pair kerning. Command+Shift+("]" or "[") to increase or decrease kerning by 10/200 em (1/20) and adding "Option" would enable 1/200 em amounts. Now, even though the keyboard command document for QXP 2017 continues to show the same commands, the kern increase or decrease is actually 1/200 em without "Option" and 1/10 of 1/200 em (1/2000) if "Option" is used. It is difficult to imagine why such a change was intentionally implemented by the development team. Yes, high-quality typography required precise control over letter pairs, but increments of 1/200 EM are more than acceptable to produce superior results. Changing a long-standing keyboard command to now produce a 1/2000 EM change is ludicrous...NO ONE could detect a letter pair spacing change of that minuscule amount.
In an "engineering" response to a support ticket I opened, the response confirmed 1) the keyboard command change had been implemented; 2) the keyboard command documentation was not changed (in error); and 3) the "Measurement Palette" could be used to produce the more typical 1/200 or 1/20 EM letter pair kerning changes. But using that method is terribly cumbersome and obliterates the quick and efficient keyboard shortcut method of making small changes.
I am hopeful that Matthias Guenther (Quark, Desktop Publishing) or another appropriate Quark staff member will see and comment on this post, either offering an acceptable explanation as to why such a change was intentionally implemented, or better-yet exert influence on the development team to restore the letter-pair kerning keyboard command(s) to their previous function.

Hi grafiksol,

The increment/ decrement values for kerning/ tracking has been changed in QuarkXPress 2017 version 13.0.1. This change was implemented as per feedback from the customers.

New Increment/ decrement values:

Without modifier key: Increment/ decrement kerning/ tracking value via ticker control / arrow key by 1
With Option modifier key: Increment/ decrement kerning/ tracking value via ticker control / arrow key by 0.1
With Shift modifier key: Increment/ decrement kerning/ tracking value via ticker control / arrow key by 10

The same has been applied for the shortcuts too:
Command+Shift+("]" or "[") : Increment/ decrement by 1
Command+Shift+Option+("]" or "[") : Increment/ decrement by 0.1
