UPGRADE to MacOS High Sierra? Our plan…

Postby Matthias Guenther (Quark) » 12 Sep 2017, 09:29

Hi all,

as every year, please allow me to remind you of having a backup – or better: a clone – of your current production machine, if you plan to upgrade to the newest version of MacOS once Apple releases it on Sep 25, 2017.

As there is no built-in way to revert to an older MacOS, please create a clone before upgrading:

Though we do not know of any serious issues of QuarkXPress 2015. 2016 or 2017 with the Golden Master of High Sierra, Apple might still implement substantial changes before release.

As every year we will need to first test the release version of Apple's newest version of MacOS, so High Sierra aka 10.13, before being able to certify it. Apple communicated Sep 25 as the release date. In the past our certification took between 5 to 21 days, after the final release of a new version of MacOS (same is true for Windows) was available.

Plan
We will most likely release an Update for QuarkXPress 2016 and QuarkXPress 2017, which add High Sierra support, on Oct 6, 2017.

Thanks
Matthias

P.S.: Always have a recent backup!

macOS High Sierra support coming soon

Postby Matthias Guenther (Quark) » 26 Sep 2017, 08:51

MacOS High Sierra (OS X 10.13), the new version of macOS, has been released on Sep 25, 2017.

The temptation is huge to try it, see what’s new and benefit from the newest features and possibilities of Apple’s newest OS. However there is also a risk: In the past we have seen that some applications did not work well (or at all) on new versions of macOS.

What’s best practice to install/use macOS High Sierra?
1. If you have a “play system,” use that to test macOS High Sierra and all applications critical for your workflow.
2. In any case, always have a backup (or better a clone) available before you upgrade to macOS High Sierra.
3. Create yourself a backdoor to be able to revert to your previous macOS:

Though we do not know of any critical issues of QuarkXPress 2015, 2016 or 2017 with macOS High Sierra, detailed tests are still ongoing.

Official support coming Oct 6
We have scheduled updates for QuarkXPress 2016 and 2017 for Oct 6, 2017, which will add official support for macOS High Sierra.

Thanks
Matthias
