versal height

Postby Q10P » 31 Oct 2017, 07:48

Hi! Is it not possible to use values for versal height directly in (the character tab of) QuarkXPress? No user-friendly implementation after 30 years for that basic typographic requirement? :o

If really not, why not?

And what layout software allows the direct setting of cap height?

I belive it's been discussed on the closed Quark FB group before. But it isn't possible to do so yet. Sign software such as VeraWorks has this function and I use a macro in CD to do so. But am unaware of this capability in any layout software.

If a property exists in Q's methods and you are on a Mac, this may be possible using AppleScript. Dunno, I use Windows.

As to whether this is a basic thing or not, I would say that for work other than signage, it's never been part of my needs.

JoLauterbach has an XTension that supports entering cap heights:

Thanks. So why has this basic typographic requirement never been implemented into the character tab like in other apps like Affinity Designer and VivaDesigner, please?

What exactly is so basic about such a feature? At least as regards layout work...

Affinity Designer, like some (a couple) other vector drawing applications are not layout software. That said, likely APub will have the exact same capability.

As regards VD...yes, it does, but it lies about the point size once one does such a thing. The cap height is correct when say using the Cap Height for sizing and typing in 1 in. However, it will still report 72 pt as the text size. At least as far as I can tell. I hadn't ever tried it until you mentioned it.

Should it be built-in to Q versus the XTension Matthias mentions? Perhaps. Join the closed Quark FB group and see how much support there is among the members. If enough people like the idea perhaps it will be placed on the wish list for voting on.
