Hanzel font missing after High Sierra upgrade

Postby SuperSwede66 » 22 Feb 2018, 13:33

As per the subject, the Hanzel (TrueType) font family has gone missing from the Quark 2017 (13.2.1) font list following updating our Macs to High Sierra 10.13.2 (and now 10.13.3).

We use Extensis Suitcase Fusion v7 (Quark plugin is installed) and the Hanzel font is one of many in the vault and is activated. I only noticed then I opened a document which uses that font and was presented with the 'missing font' dialogue. I have contacted Extensis and they say it's a Quark issue. I have tried opening InDesign (which we normally don't use) and the font IS there. It seems to be missing in Quark only?!?!

I have tried deactivating the plugin, but that made no difference.

Any thoughts?

Solution?

Regards,
JB

Hanzel is a free font from 1994. It may have some defects. I converted it to OTF format in FontLab. I send in a private message.

Thank you so much for your help. I'll see if I can convert the other Hanzel fonts too as we have all the usual variations (bold, extended, condensed, italic etc)

Our fonts should be all OK though as I tidied them up a number of years ago. We were having problems with different fonts or font versions on different machines. Some were broken etc etc etc. As part of doing that, if a font didn't pass all checks then we didn't use it. All fonts are now identical across all machines. It took a while to do, but was worth it as we haven't had a font problem since then. Until now.

Anyway... this still doesn't answer the original question of why the font has disappeared in Quark only as it works perfectly elsewhere.

Hi SuperSwede,

does the font work in TextEdit or any other Apple application?

Thanks
Matthias

Hi Matthias.

Yes! I've just tried it and it works in TextEdit, OpenOffice and Mac Mail.

But in Quark it's as if it didn't exist. The font list goes from HammerThin straight to Helvetica.

And if you install it using FontBook, then it doesn't work either in QuarkXPress?
Just trying to see where the issue might be.

You can also send me the font via private message.

Thanks
Matthias

In order to install it using FontBook I had to disable it in Suitcase first (as it came up with a warning about duplicates). But once that was done it installed just fine.

It did, however, still NOT make an appearance in Quark. But I tried it using OpenOffice. And when disabled in Suitcase it didn't show in OpenOffice. But once installed using FontBook it was there again.

I've zipped up the font files and will send to you. Good luck in figuring it out.

Hi Super,

I tried Hanzel on Sierra and it works fine in QuarkXPress 2017.
I will try on High Sierra tomorrow.

Thanks
Matthias

Hi Matthias

We've had that font as part of our library for many years and many iterations of OS X. No problems at all up to and including Sierra. Be interesting to hear if you have the same problem in High Sierra too.

Hi Super,

yes, we are seeing the issue on High Sierra too. Looks like Apple has changed something in High Sierra that's causing QuarkXPress to fail with such fonts. Still investigating.

Thanks
Matthias
