Page numbers in filenames

Postby SuperSwede66 » 03 Jun 2015, 09:50

Our printers need single page PDFs with the page number in a particular format at the start of the filename.

E.g. p31_MM11.06.15.pdf

The filename is broken down as p followed by the actual page number, then an underscore and the rest if pretty much free so we use the initial of the magazine name, followed by the issue date, sometimes adding the name of the advertiser if it is a full page bleed ad.

When you create single page PDFs in Quark it always adds, for example, (Page 31) at the end of whatever filename it is. We normally create a Quark filename with the page numbers in the file and the rest the same as per the example above. So when we PDF it, p31-90_MM11.06.15.qxp will become p31-90_MM11.06.15(Page 31).pdf, p31-90_MM11.06.15(Page 32).pdf and so on. We then have to edit the filename so it conforms to the required standard.

It would be really handy if it was possible to use an 'insert page number here' symbol (or whatever) so it creates the filename we need straight away, just like adding a page number in a footer, rather than us having to edit the filename after it's been created which just wastes time.

So what I'd like is the possibility of creating multiple PDFs by saving the filename as p<#>_MM11.06.15.pdf. The <#> being replaced with 31, 32 etc to create files named p31_MM11.06.15.pdf, p32_MM11.06.15.pdf etc.

Hi SuperSwede66,

Thank you for contacting Quark.

Kindly verify with the followings:
1. Create a new project with the custom name for the layout name.
2. Modify the section start pages with the Prefix and format.
3. Create some contents in the layout.
4. Set the PDF export Preferences as preferred. (Project_Layout Name, Layout_Project Name, Layout Name, Project Name)
5. Now output and verify the PDF naming.

Kindly send your files/PDF files to analyze the issue to apalaniappan@quark.com

Thanks

Hi! If you're on a Mac, the best way would be to run a AppleScript script so you name the files the way you want.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting Quark.

It seems that when you are exporting the layout as PDF the option 'Export pages as separate PDFs' is selected, due to this the Page # in () is getting appended.

Kindly uncheck this option 'Export pages as separate PDFs' and specify the name of the PDF and verify the outputted PDF file name.

Also, set the PDF Default naming preferences as per your workflows and output.

Thanks

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I've been on holiday and have only just spotted it.

What I'm asking for is a way to tell Quark where to put the page number (in the filename), rather than it being appended to the filename (and in brackets). In the same way you can add a page number to the footer of a page.

Each of our projects (which together form the various sections that make up the whole weekly magazine) can have anything from a few pages to 100 pages and when we're done with them and want to create the single-page PDFs as required by our printers it makes sense to use the 'Export pages as separate PDFs' so all pages in each project are done in one go. Otherwise we'd have to key in the page number to export, and set the appropriate filename, for every single page which would take a long time.

We use Project.pdf as the default PDF name in Quark preferences.

An example below.

Currently Quark will export the PDFs as follows. Imagine a project called Project.qxp has got pages 45 to 82 set. Currently it will export as follows (assuming I don't change the output filename which will be 'Project.pdf'):

Project (Page 45).pdf
Project (Page 46).pdf
Project (Page 47).pdf
etc
etc

The bold characters are added by Quark.

What I would like to be able to do is put some form of special character or code in the filename when PDFing the project as follows.

p<??>_Project.pdf (where <??> is the code for page number) which would create the following files.

p45_Project.pdf
p46_Project.pdf
p47_Project.pdf
etc
etc

Again the bold characters are to be added by Quark.

It would be extra handy if the number of ? symbols set how many characters are needed. We would normally use page numbers 01 to 99 as we usually have less than a hundred pages per issue so would use ??, but sometimes we go over 100 pages so would use ??? to enable page numbers from 001 to 999.

I hope it's all clear as to what I'm asking for.
