[Enter] key doesn't work on my computer

Postby LyleM » 14 Sep 2017, 22:54

If I press the [Enter] key I get a line feed and not a carriage return.

This is like Word when you press [Shift][Enter] to drop down a line and not start a new paragraph. If you turn on invisibles you will see an arrow pointing down after pressing the Enter key rather than a paragraph mark which looks like a backwards capital P with two lines.

A line feed is ASCII 010 and a carriage return is ASCII 013. The only way I can add an [Enter] i.e. start a new paragraph is to use the old DOS trick and hold down the [Alt] key and press 013 on the number pad.

I'm using a Logitech K550 bluetooth keyboard on my Windows 10 Pro computer. No other software seems to do the same thing. I can only assume that the key scanning is incorrectly sending out a line feed character instead of a carriage return. I'm assuming that this is unique to Windows as Mac use a form of Unix which handles the return key slightly different.

Hi Lyle,

QuarkXPress on Mac and Windows uses the Return key (on main key area of a keyboard) to insert a next line (with new paragraph).
Shift+Return is a soft return (linefeed you might call it).

The Enter key (on numeric keypad) is used for "next text box" or "next column" commands.
