This is a pay money solution but I feel offers more versatility rather than purchasing Xpress 5 for backsaving only.

Not a cheap solution.

Importing transparent tiffs / eps / png into quark

Xpress does not support full transparency. It only supports clipping paths. Either deal with the hard lined issue, create the background along with the image and place that or work with a dtp application that supports full transparency.

Export to PDF in QX5?

File>Export>PDF.

It is still the pdfxtension and it also still requires distiller. They just played musical chairs with the command.
