Yes, I agree with many of your concerns, ErikSeems a bit mystifying as to why the open source solution was dropped. I will reserve most judgement until the kinks are worked out, and given past history, it looks like that could still take some time...

Quark 8 -- A slap in the face

Oh yes, not too good to be quick to judge--look at the constant stream of bugs that follows Dreamweaver from version to version, for example...

So, what's the verdict?

Yes, it does certainly look better, but the lack of WYSIWYG controls is a bit mystifying. Also, it did take some time to load up the forums, as well as log in. Hopefully, there will be some upgrades soon...

Do you recommend using quark to your clients/associates?

Depends on the user in question. For most of my career, the layouts have been in Quark. Not being one to be isolated, I have learned ID, and use it on a regular basis (like on this project right now). In all honesty, both apps have their strengths and weaknesses, and I would advise any designer and/...

Non Breaking Tabs??

Emma, I have had to set up enough directories myself, and know what aggravation issues like this can cause. I don't know of scripting way around this, but if this problem is only occurring in certain areas, what about changing the text style to introduce tighter tracking values? Not so much to make ...

Quark 8?

Hey, Ben,

Isn't there usually a preference for the "new kid in town", and to ignore the "old reliable"?

Good Practice - ideas please!

[strong]thing:[/strong]You say tomato and I say tomato ... Kinda loses it when written, but you get the idea ... IT'S FRIDAY! I don't find this all surprising. Although a born American, I have no issues understanding English as it is spoken in Britain, the Caribbean, South Asia, or Australia and New...

Fix what's broke before you bail on the desktop user

Thanks for the article, Chuck

Looks good, but will remain to be seen how it all flies. I'd hate to think what the field would be like if Quark folded, and there were only one game in town. Competition is good...

Fix what's broke before you bail on the desktop user

cewack,

You are partially right. Quark 8, currently, is only planned to be developed for the HAL 9000 system (according to undisclosed sources). The rest of the user base will have to deal with an internet-based solution...

Quark 7.3 file perms no access

Erik, Aside from working in v.7 and v.6, isn't it also an issue when using the same version, but accessing the file from a server and overwriting the file when saving changes? Was recently in an workgroup environment running Quark 6 and 7, with 5 users. Because of known issues with accessing Quark f...
