Just a heads up if you want to upgrade to QXP v10:
The XML-import has been removed, so if you want to use that you have to stay on QXP v9.

I am sorry, but I cannot help you further. This looks like (one of maaany) Quark output bugs. It is slightly less "dumb" if you output with native transparency instead of using Quark's (subpar) flattening und convert to PDF/X:1a in Acrobat Pro. In that case the drop shadow will not be K-only but CMY...

I tested with a simple grayscale image as well and it works as expected. The image in the exported PDF is grayscale as well.
You should check your color management settings in both Quark and Acrobat Pro. How do you check the image in Acrobat Pro btw?
