Font Management on OS X In A Nutshell

good advice. BUT :!: Some applications are particularly unhappy about the lack of certain fonts, and do things that would appear to have nothing to do with fonts. For example without an active version of Times, inDesign CS will crash when you ask it to create a new document but only when you save it...

PDF Filter v1.6 (14) vs PDF filter 2.0 PPC(569)

I've got PDF Filter 2.01 (dated Aug 1 2002) with a pdf guide for version 2.0 from Quark (dated Sept 10 2001). Just done a search on the quark downloads site and 1.6 appears to be the lastest, no sign of v2 at all :? Perhaps this is why my success rate at getting placed pdf's out of quark5 was so low...

Quark switched the meaning of "high jpeg" between 6.1 and 6.5.
Try "Low jpeg" :?
high jpeg now refers to high compression rather than high quality.

Importing pdfs to Quark 5.0 - poor resolution

Open the PDF's in Acrobat, Save As EPS (select the options to suit your printer, level3 postscript is best (least lossy)). Replace the pdfs in your document with the eps. It's a pain I know. Check in Usage - Pictures Tab - More information - scroll to the bottom if it still says PDF page 1 it will p...

Jaws is a top Bond baddy or a rather successful Spielberg movie. :D
but you knew that already...
With regards to quark, jaws is a 3rd party application for producing pdfs, without having to use distiller. :D

overprint failure in PDF

I think there are situations where overprints go wrong. I have started changing all PDF's to level3 postscript EPS IF THEY HAVE TO be placed in quark (as recommended by Forum Guru Robert Zacherl), so far I've had 100% success, but I guess I've been lucky! As I understand it Quark6.1 & 6.5 still inte...

Quark 6.x no longer uses distiller to produce pdfs. When you use Export quark 6 now uses JAWS I still don't think you can save "pdf settings" using the Export function, (this surely can't be that difficult Quark  ) The usual workaround here is to set up a "print style" in Quark and write a pos...

Czech diacritical?

Type the letter you want, then the superscript V, then the next letter. Highlight the 1st letter and the superscript V and use the "Track" button to give a negative Track till the V is over the character. I would suggest putting each "pair" in a seperate text box so you can quickly cut and paste. Or...
