QXP 10 on MacOS X - font names handling

Post by yaegaki » 15 Oct 2013, 17:55

I do a fair bit of Japanese language processing. In 9.5.3.1 (PLUS license), with the QxP's program language set to English (US), I see the fonts by their Japanese (or Chinese, or Korean) names. In 10.0.2, I see English names only (Enabled East Asia support in Preferences).
Is there a way to enable the 9.5 behavior in 10?

Here are two screenshots to illustrate the difference:

I am using Mac OS X 10.7.5, 16 GB RAM, MBP Late 2011.

Did you try relaunching the application after changing preferences?

QXP 10 on MacOS X - font names handling

Post by Sirish Nair (Quark) » 15 Oct 2013, 19:20

Hi yaegaki,

The behavior for displaying font names in font menus has been changed in QXP 10. Now, the names of fonts are displayed as per the current OS language. So if your current OS language is US English then the names of all fonts (Japanese, Korean, Chinese) would also be displayed in English. In case you wish to see the Japanese names of the Japanese fonts, then you need to change the OS language to Japanese. It doesn't depend on the whether the East Asian functionality has been enabled in Preferences or not.

QXP 10 on MacOS X - font names handling

Sirish,

I'll give you a real world example of why this is an unwelcome change: I received an e-mail (from a QxP 9.5 user), suggesting that I use font. How for the life of me am I supposed to know that the font in queston is ST Kaiti?
This is a very frustrating change.
Is there a logical reason why in QxP 10 under MacOS X Quark decided to remove the ability to change application's language (and consequentially everything else, like font handling, changed its expected behavior)? I mean, knowledge base article tells me that this was not changed under Windows, only under Mac.
Frustrated.
