The new, fast QuarkXPress 10.2 has been released

Post by Matthias Guenther (Quark) » 29 Jul 2014, 20:18

Hi all,

we just released QuarkXPress 10.2, which features major performance and speed improvements.

Version 10.2 is free to all current QuarkXPress 10 users and is available as a manual download and via Auto Updater.

Everyone can try QuarkXPress 10.2 again, as we reset the 30 day test counter for the Test Drive.

The new QuarkXPress 10.2 offers:
  • Significant Performance Improvements:
Now blazingly fast, sometimes even faster than QuarkXPress 9.5.4
  • Vast stability improvements:
A lot of pre-release testers never saw a crash.
  • Important output quality improvements:
QuarkXPress now outputs all Ghent Workgroup Output Tests v4 correctly.
  • More Control over Performance and Image Quality:
Use a preference to balance between maximum performance and highest image display quality
  • Redlining: Track changes within QuarkXPress
  • Notes: Adding comments to text content, similar to yellow "sticky" notes.
  • Anchored boxes without limit: Anchor boxes in a box and again in a box and again in a box and again in a box...
  • Import/export hyphenation exceptions: Share the exceptions across projects, manually or automatically.
  • AppleScript improvement: Export as image via AppleScript.
As QuarkXPress 10.2 sports a new file format, please be aware that 10.0/10.1 can't open files from version 10.2. Of course 10.2 can open any file higher than 7.0, so also 10.0/10.1 (and backsave to 9).

Let us know how this new version performs for you please.

Thank you!
Matthias

Morning Matthias, I have one question about the performance vs quality. I have found in the Display settings where you can switch between the two but in performance mode the images are very low res.
I looked at the help files and the following is mentioned:

(Windows only) Use the Color TIFFs drop-down list to specify the color depth of screen previews created for color TIFFs when they are imported.
(Windows only)Use the Gray TIFFs drop-down list to specify the resolution of screen previews created for grayscale TIFFs when they are imported.

However none of these additional drop down boxes are there in my version, and yes I use Windows.

Any guidance would be appreciated because I would like to find a balance between the quality and performance.

Many thanks.

Hello Matthias,

I can confirm that Quark XPress 10.2's output (and import) of PDFs is vastly improved over previous 10.x versions.
But some things do not work as "advertised":
  • Ghent Workgroup Output Tests v4 only work if you import and export the PDFs that contain only one test patch; if you try the PDF that contains several tests per page QXP imports only the top headlines of the PDF and outputs only that as well, ignoring the rest of the page. (see http://i.imgur.com/JAaVYkc.png)
  • still no way for a late binding workflow (preserve ICC profiles on output)
  • if an imported PDF contains the color "None", you cannot export as PDF. It will stop with an error message saying that export failed, but the log file that is generated states
    %%[Distiller generating G:/Temp/Ghent PDF Output Suite V4.0/Projekt6.pdf]%%
    %%[Distiller operation succeeded.]%%
  • some PDFs do not display a preview in the file place dialog but import fine (and QXP does not crash anymore when I browse several PDFs)
  • rendering intents of objects in a PDF are still ignored
  • grayscale images lose about 10% when exported with "CMYK" if compared to "AsIs" or original file
You can have some fun with drop shadows and rotated frames: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCvfK6LFfFQ
In short: create a frame, apply drop shadow, rotate frame by 90°, export as PDF, *boom* drop shadow is not rotated in QXP anymore until you rotate the frame again or re-apply the drop shadow. It even exports that way, see video.

BTW, what is "NewFeature 1" that I can install if I want to?

Hi Matthias, one small point to note is that when you go to the help files from Quark, they still reference version 10.1. So either the label just needs changing or the help files are not updated yet. Could you confirm which this is please.

Thanks

Andy

You can have some fun with drop shadows and rotated frames: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCvfK6LFfFQ
Meanwhile, on video one of unresolved problems is also visible. Icons in palettes periodically become invisible.

Hi Andy,

yes, it seems that the help file is still from previous versions, it hasn't been updated yet. The 10.2 manual to be posted soon will list the correct behavior. There is no second preferences to set the behavior of previews.

Let me quickly explain how it works:

Adaptive Resolution (AR) Preference in QuarkXPress 10.2
Background
QuarkXPress 10 has an adaptive resolution (AR) mechanism that shows the best available resolution for each image, depending on zoom level and display. It is not a simple hires/lores resolution anymore and it is not a preview, you see the representation of the actual image file (only exception is EPS in QuarkXPress 10, in QuarkXPress 2015 we'll add this for EPS too).

In QuarkXPress 10.2 we improved the AR mechanism significantly, which means when scrolling and panning you'll see optimized cached previews. That makes everything much faster than before. Previous versions of 10 didn't do that, which caused the slow down when scrolling or panning.
Plus we introduced a preference to basically turn off AR.

How it works
1) When you set the preference to "Quality", AR is turned on and working at its best quality.
With that setting QuarkXPress will always show you the best quality for images, regardless whether it is for pixel-based imaged or vector-based graphics.

2) When you set the preference to "Performance", AR is kind of turned off.
With that setting QuarkXPress shows preview images. Preview images are created this way:
  • For pixel-based images, QuarkXPress shows a preview with 72 ppi or less, depending on the resulting preview and zoom/scale. QuarkXPress uses 1.25 million pixels as a maximum for previews, meaning if a preview would have more pixels, resolution is dropped.
  • For vector based images, QuarkXPress rasterizes the vectors and shows it with 72 ppi or less, depending on the resulting preview and zoom/scale. QuarkXPress uses a maximum of 20 MB for previews, meaning if a specific preview would have a larger size, resolution is dropped.
So bottom-line, when you have the preference set to "Quality", you see always the best image quality and it works much faster than QuarkXPress 10.0/10.1. When you set the preference to "Performance", then you see previews with 72 ppi or lower (if you use very large images).
---

Does that explain it?

Also, that maybe explains why everybody may see different results, it very much depends on the images that you use.

Regards
Matthias

Hi lpisanec,

thanks for the video and the explanation, that's definitely something we need to look into. I'll send you an email later with the bug ID.
