QuarkXPress 10 and Yosemite

Post by Matthias Guenther (Quark) » 30 Sep 2014, 13:33

Hi all,

so Apple just released Yosemite. Looks exciting.

Here is the current status of QuarkXPress regarding Yosemite (OS X 10.10) and the future roadmap.

1) We have already incorporated several fixes for Yosemite in QuarkXPress 10.2 and 10.2.1, though both versions do not yet officially supporting Yosemite.

2) We have QuarkXPress 10.5 in Final Candidate stage. QuarkXPress 10.5 will support Yosemite. We will need to test the Final Candidate intensively on the just released Yosemite build in all languages. If there are no fixes needed, we can release QuarkXPress 10.5 in ten to 20 days.

QuarkXPress 10.5 will be free of charge for everybody having a license of QuarkXPress 10.

Despite QuarkXPress 10.2.1 not having any known issues on Yosemite, our advise is to NOT immediately upgrade your PRODUCTION system to Yosemite. Please wait until QuarkXPress and all your other critical applications are supporting Yosemite officially to get the best experience. Alternatively use a test system to test your workflow on Yosemite before touching your production system.

About QuarkXPress 9, we do not know yet for sure whether we can support v9 on Yosemite, currently it looks unlikely. Our current goal is to get QuarkXPress 10 supported on Yosemite as quickly as possible. We did find is that the installer of QuarkXPress 9 has issues, eg it doesn’t recognize the version number correctly (thinks 10.10 is before 10.6) and thus does not install. This should not effect you if you are migrating (upgrading) your OS X.
We will not support QuarkXPress 8 or older on Yosemite. Please note that "not supported" does not mean it might not run, it just means you are running it at your own risk and Quark will not fix issues that are specific to this version of the OS.

Please note:
When you plan to upgrade to OS X Yosemite immediately after Apple has released it, please make a backup first, so that you can revert easily in case any of your tools doesn't work properly under OS X 10.10. Here's a detailed description on how to keep a running clone of your work environment and how to easily revert:

Please also check Auto Updater and this forum frequently to be notified about the release of QuarkXPress 10.5.

Thanks
Matthias

EDIT: We have released QuarkXPress 10.5, which adds official support for OS X 10.10 Yosemite, on November 5, 2014. Please see here for details: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=26931

Hi, Matthias!
With what such hasty jump through versions is connected? I understand that 10.3, 10.4 won't be?
Whether follows that after an exit 10.5 we should expect QuarkXPress 11? And how new version will be qualitative, after all many critical mistakes aren't solved in 10 versions yet, it would be desirable to be sure that old mistakes won't be in new QuarkXPress 11

Hi Andrej,

you are right, from a Desktop perspective we could also call it 10.3 or 10.4, however we try to keep our version numbers consistent between all products, therefore the jump to 10.5. And of course it will also address any remaining issues that we are aware of.

Thanks
Matthias

Does QuarkXPress 10.5 have new features?
Can QuarkXPress 10.5 run under OS X 10.7?
Is QuarkXPress 10.5 the 64-bit application?
Dose QuarkXPress 10.5 support PDF/X-4 export directly?

Hi kawamura,

QuarkXPress 10.5 will probably run on Lion (10.7), however as communicated before, we are dropping offical support for Lion once we support Yosemite.

So QuarkXPress 10.2.1 supports:
Lion (10.7),
Mountain Lion (10.8) and
Mavericks (10.9).

QuarkXPress 10.5 will support:
Mountain Lion (10.8),
Mavericks (10.9) and
Yosemite (10.10).

(And both will support also Windows of course, versions 7, 8 and 8.1.)

See also here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=4608

And I am sure you understand that I cannot comment on details about future versions, however be assured that a couple of features from the ranked wishlist will appear.

Thanks
Matthias

Hi everybody,

we have conducted some first tests on Yosemite and so far we have not found any issues with QuarkXPress 10.2.1 on Yosemite. Still we advise you to test this combination intensively before using it in production.

Regards
Matthias

Good morning,

Here's a few glitches that we have found testing QuarkXPress 10 on Yosemite, we'll be fixing these in the upcoming 10.5:
  • "Windows shade" not working correctly (double click behaviour on a title bar of a palette) on Yosemite
  • Project view doesn't change to full screen when clicking on green button on Yosemite
  • Creating an ePub might crash on Yosemite
  • Incorrect text language and fallback font get applied to Kanji text typed from Japanese text on Yosemite
  • Invalid files can be selected in open dialog by using the arrow keys in Yosemite
  • QuarkXPress 10 installer does not always deploy Quark Auto Update on Yosemite
So except the ePub export no crash bugs or major flaws found so far.

Regards
Matthias
