Any code to center web pages please?? wrappers, frames, tabl

Post by GeorginaKate » 11 Sep 2008, 10:31

Hi, I have designed about 25 websites using Quarkxpress and they are all aligned to the left which is extremely annoying! I have tried [strong]adding variable width text boxes[/strong] to either side which works for very, very basic websites where nothing on your page overlaps but my sites have animations, rollovers and many layers so it does not work at all.
I am a complete beginner when it comes to creating code but I can manage basic code editing. I have tried playing around with the code and adjusting the margins andaligning centre/middle etc which moves a few items but not all. I add all my statcounters, paypal buttons, embeded maps etc in code using wordpad or similar so I don't mind taking my pages in there before uploading to the internet.
In my research I have come across wrappers, divs, frames, tables etc, [strong]is there ANY code I can add to my pages[/strong] which will wrap, frame or center my pages, regardless of the content of my webpages. PLEASE!!
Some of my sites are:

Lots of ways to do this depending on the site. I've had to post this as an image because this forum won't let me display the html!

Any code to center web pages please?? wrappers, frames, tabl

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!
At last after all these years of trying it finally works. I inserted the code and viewed the page in internet explorer 8 on my pc and it didn't work, when you tested the page on a mac and it did work i was confused so I decided to test it in a different browser. I downloaded google chrome and it works, my Quark page is actually centred regardless of how many items overlap, how many layers and the content.
Now I just have to work out why it doesn't work in ie8 as I expect lots of people have it. i wonder if ie7 is the same? i will experiment with a few more browsers.
Thankyou so much, Georgina

Great I've fixed it for IE 8you need to change the first two lines!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1- ... l.dtd"html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"both these lines need tags but I haven't put them here cos the forum doesn't like it

Hi, I have just finished another site http://www.present-days-chichester.co.uk and applied all the code you suggested and it has worked perfectly on every page. From now on I will apply the code to all my new sites plus whenI have time I will go back and do it to all my previous sites.
Thankyou!

Any code to center web pages please?? wrappers, frames, tabl

this may not be the most correct place to do it, but since my question is about the very same problem I thought I'd tag it onto here
my webdesign capabilities are at best limited (I have no idea what CSS is or how to do it, etc.) - my site (http://www.mantlermusic.com) is entirely based on tables and it works pretty much on any screen
however - could someone take a look and tell me if there is a (relatively) simple way to adjust all pages so that they appear in the center of any screen size?

Seeing as you have used table based layout you can simply change the table tag on introduction.htm to:

Code: Select all

<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" width="597" align="center">

so it is just adding align="center" to your table tag

yes indeed! that works - thanks!
haven't checked all pages yet, but I do have one problem: in the top frame with the navigation bar I don't seem to be able to center it - it's never correctly centered above the content table in the bottom frame - any ideas? (and it seem to be different in Firefox and IE ....

later .. with some fiddling I seem to have been able to get the navigation bar centered as well

but .. another however ...... in Firefox with View/Text Size/Normal, everything looks good - but In IE I have to set the View/Text Size to Smaller (instead of Medium) for it to look the same as in Firefox - how can this be avoided? how can I make it look the same size in both browsers with the normal viewing selected ?
