I experienced the same problems with imported XML text not taking the applied styles. However, the text took on whatever my Normal paragraph style was set at, so I modified the Normal paragraph style then created character styles for other styles I wanted to use. Used the Normal style for entire XML text, and used character style for specific instances. It worked for me, maybe it'll work for you.

i may help you in that if you provide me certain information
1.in which application you have created the XML file
2.how you are applying the style sheet to that

I am finding style sheet paragraph formatting will work if the tag is a the begining of a line and preceeded by a space - which is an annoyance in the layout. I also find that if you work with positioning the place holders or change style sheets they may stop working. Deleteing the placeholders and starting over seems to clear this up. I am using OSX 10.4 and Quark 6.5.
