QLA giving multiple licenses to the same user????

Post by Bob Bitchin » 08 Jun 2004, 10:02

I've been having a problem where I run out of licenses and check the check out status in my QLA client and it will show a single user with two or three licenses checked out in there name. This seems to happen when the user crashes, it seems as if in stead of returning the old license it takes another new license. Is there a way to free up these licenses and prevent this from happening?

For reclaiming Licenses, close all copies of QuarkXPress on the Network and then launch the QLA Client Control Panel and go to the Configuration Tab.

Then set the :

HeartBeat interval = 60
HeartBeat retries = 3
Extended HeartBeat interval = 60
Maximum Extended checkout duration = 1

Once all this is done, click on Save and close the Client Control Panel. Let the QLA Server run for 3 to 4 mins and close it and relaunch the QLA Server. Once you have done this, all the Licenses should have been reclaimed by the server automatically.

Try above workaround.......may be fixed your problem...

Thanks Rock, you rock!

That worked. Should changing the heartbeat value prevent this from happening again?

If you keep the heart beat interval as 60 secs it will clog your network, you may change that to 300 secs to prevent unnecessary traffic.

hmmmmmm good point about the traffic.
However won't the same problem come back if I switch it back to 300?

The problem appears if due to some reasons the QLA server is not able to retrieve the license. Then the license is blocked, in that case you may use the above mentioned technique to reclaim the license, before the suggested time period, that is 300 secs.

Any idea why it can't retreive the license?
It seems to be a regular occurance.

Are you able to retreive the license within 15 mins if you keep the heart beat interval to 300secs?

We had the same problem, but some of the licenses had not been retrieved for days!

I called Tech Support, and in the process of downloading a new license file, they told me to delete save.dat and hwmusage.dat in the C:\\ProgramFiles\Quark\Quark License Administrator\Server folder. That seemed to release the licenses. We are running the QLA on a Windows 2000 server.

nope.
I'll deal with the network traffic, there cant be that many packets going back and forth.
