QuarkXPress 2015 on El Capitan

Post by Matthias Guenther (Quark) » 11 Sep 2015, 09:01

Hi all,

you might have followed Apple’s keynote two days ago…

Though Apple didn't specifically mentioned or show OS X El Capitan, they did "secretly" leak the release date of El Capitan:
Sep 30, 2015.

That’s a pleasant surprising for all us, as the last years Apple had released new versions of OS X always around mid-October.

However it means for us that we need to do some reshuffling and narrow the scope of the next update of QuarkXPress 2015, so that we can release in time. In the past years we have managed to release a certified version for the new OS X within 2-3 weeks.

And this time we'll be faster, we want to release a compatible update of QuarkXPress 2015 within two weeks of the official release of El Capitan (without sacrificing quality of course).

I'll let you know closer to the release when we can foresee a concrete day, we first need to check what Apple has changed between the GM release and the final release of OS X El Capitan on Sep 30.

Until then please do not update your production system to El Capitan yet, as you might experience crashes or unexpected behavior and we cannot help you before QuarkXPress 2015 is officially supported under El Capitan.

Regards
Matthias

P.S.: And please build yourself a backdoor in order to be able to revert OS X:

Has anyone been using the current version of Quark under an El Capitan Beta who can report on its "workliness"?

Better safe than sorry in terms of upgrading, but it's always a bummer to not be able to update to the new OS when it becomes available because Quark isn't ready yet. :( You know how excited we get about these things!

Hi rickpoet,

remember to do something like this today BEFORE you upgrade OS X:
http://bit.ly/DowngradeOSX

We do know of some crash bugs of the current version of QuarkXPress 2015. We also have an update for QuarkXPress 2015 being tested by our beta testers that seems to work just fine. To be able to see when we can release that we need to wait whether Apple released the Golden Master Candidate or did some changes in-between (like last year with Yosemite).

Still, I am positive that we will be able to release an update within 7-14 days after today.

Thanks
Matthias

Hi all.

as you all know Apple released El Capitan a few hours ago.

Besides the obvious challenge to download it quickly ;) we noticed that the release version (15A284) is a later build than the Golden Master Candidate (15A282a) available the last weeks.

So that means that unfortunately we need to test and see what has changed before being able to communicate a release date of a supported update of QuarkXPress 2015.

Thanks
Matthias

Don't upgrade it crashes terribly. Keep forgetting how slow Quark is at getting stable releases - this time I got caught out.

If you call 17-21 days slow, yes, then the last three years we were slow. ;)
However I still feel that's quite fast keeping in mind that we test 30+ languages in different combinations.

And this year we are going to beat that, I am sure. Without sacrificing quality of course, the team is not targeted to just beat the 17 days. Quality comes first, even if we lose the race.

Competition works. Adobe InDesign and Q2ID can open QXD files in El Capitan. Just saying.

Hi scross,

sure, but with that solution you are then forced to use InDesign… :o How will that "work"? ;)

Jokes aside:
Have a look at Adobe's statements regarding support of InDesign on El Capitan. So far I have not seen anything, though they made statements about other apps' support on El Capitan. So they are probably still testing InDesign on El Capitan, as we are. And they are luckier that IDCC2015 doesn't crash on El Capitan. Point taken.

That said, our goal hasn't changed: 21 days after release we'll support QuarkXPress 2015 on El Capitan. And currently it looks like it will even be earlier.

Thanks
Matthias

...or in may case run Quark 10 from another Mac on Yosemite using Screen Sharing.

Question: Seeing QuarkXpress crashes when opening on El Capitan how should/can the Quark Updater work? Or do I have to download and setup again and loose all the prefs?
