Can't print separations

Post by cctpub2000 » 09 Jan 2016, 14:36

My company is using Quark 2015 with El Capitan.
We cannot print separations. It does not matter what ppd we choose.
We are using a Canon IPC 700.
The ppd we use for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign work fine, but not Quark 2015.
Any suggestions?

You can simply export your layout to a PDF file, then print separations within Acrobat.
Printing separations seems to be an obsolete command as all modern RIPs can manage separations.
Every day is a good day to learn something new.

We like to output direct composite and separated lasers from our customer's files before we start to prep them. Is there a known issue in trying to output direct separated lasers from Quark2015?

Hi cct,

host-based separations have been deprecated in QuarkXPress 9 and are not available in QuarkXPress 10 or QuarkXPress 2015:

You need to either export as composite or use InRIP-Separations please

Thanks
Matthias

Is there any way to create a patch for this? Separations are still handy for a lot of us using older print systems. I seem to remember you guys created a patch for QXP9 so we could have the functionality. It is a PITA to have to export as PDF and into AI or another program to get our separations.

Hi BP,

we never created a patch for QuarkXPress 9. In QuarkXPress 9 the Product Manager decided to just "hide" the functionality and gave out a small digital token to re-enable it. The idea was to find out how many people ask for this. It wasn't many.

Therefore back then the decision was made to not implement "host-based separations" in the new, modern output and graphics engine in QuarkXPress 10. So it wasn't removed, it wasn't implemented.

As we heard several people asking us about it, when we started fresh we asked all our customers about introducing host-based separations in a newer version of QuarkXPress. In both surveys it landed somewhere in the last ranks.

Therefore – and as the world has already recommended composite workflows for a decade or more and most people use PDF-based workflows – we have not made the decision to re-introduce that, though I can see valid workflows and reasons to use this still in 2016.

And using Acrobat it is easy to do with QuarkXPress 2015/2016.

Thanks
Matthias
