Hi Uzbad,

QuarkXPress doesn't currently support the import and export of footnotes via XTags or export of footnotes via MS Word.

That's too bad. Can I put in a feature request?

1) Ability to import footnotes via XTags.
2) Ability to export footnotes in XTag files.
3) Ability to export footnotes when saving Quark files as MS Word files.

And a VERY nice feature would be:

4) Fine-grained ability to control the reference number of each footnotes, so that for instance, a chapter could run:
Footnote 1* auto-numbered
Footnote 2* auto-numbered
Footnote 3* auto-numbered
Footnote † (manually numbered dagger footnote)
Footnote ‡ (manually numbered double-dagger footnote)
Footnote 4* auto-numbered
Footnote 5* auto-numbered
Footnote 6* auto-numbered

Is anybody from Quark monitoring this forum? I guess not... that doesn't seem like a good sign :(

For feature request I think you should visit Suggestion Box at: viewforum.php?f=9

You can control the reference number and achieve what you showed in example (1, 2, 3, †, ‡, 4, 5, 6..) using Insert\edit footnote dialog.

You can either specify custom marks or a different footnote style to desired footnote references.

Hi uzbad,

I have added an enhancement for your XTags (import, export) and MSWord (export) feature request.

Regd your query with regard to:

Footnote 1* auto-numbered
Footnote 2* auto-numbered
Footnote 3* auto-numbered
Footnote † (manually numbered dagger footnote)
Footnote ‡ (manually numbered double-dagger footnote)
Footnote 4* auto-numbered
Footnote 5* auto-numbered
Footnote 6* auto-numbered

This is already possible in QuarkXPress 2015, 2016.
In QXP 2015, you apply a footnote style which starts with at 1 for 1st 1st footnote. Then you can manually customize the footnote marker using Custom Footnote option in Style menu or Footnote styles palette ; set the dagger and double characters as custom footnote marks. Again when you want to apply footnote marker as 4, you can use Custom Footnote option and select restart numbering at 4.

in QXP 2016, you can even automatically apply the dagger and double dagger footnote marker. There is new numbering style for such characters. You can create an additional footnote style having that specific numbering style. When you want to set footnote marker as dagger. you can just apply th other footnote style. Again when you want to apply footnote marker as 4, you can use Custom Footnote option, select the 1st footnote style and select restart numbering at 4.

So it is evident that one can not select more than one footnote at a time in this new version of QuarkXpress either. How would you go about applying (and retaining local formatting) a style to all footnotes? Most of the word files I work with have local formatting applied to the footnotes which overrides the standard footnotes style. I now have to select one footnote at a time and select "apply style and retain local formatting". With several hundred footnotes this is annoying to say the least.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Hello,
just as annoying is the inability to do research within the notes. You can only search for the text.

I agree,
Search & Find/Replace should also work in footnotes and selecting all footnotes should be possible...

Thanx
