PSD Files Not Working Correctly

Post by CarlyMooMoo » 29 Mar 2017, 13:35

I've got literally thousands of Quarkxpress files on my computer, many using Photoshop .psd files, because .psd supports both background transparency and CMYK printing. Ever since I upgraded to Quarkxpress 2106, my .psd files appear corrupted on-screen and print out weird. I've got to convert them to .png files to maintain the transparency of the image's background, but .png files don't support CMYK. My full-color vendor keeps complaining because I've got RGB files in my projects. Any suggestions?

Hi there! Are you generating PDFs from your Quark files? If so, you can convert RGB pix to CMYK at the export stage. Check if everything's OK on the output though.
Now if your workflow is different what type of corruption are you seeing? Since the issue turned up at the upgrade of Quark, there might be some feature in the PSD file handled differently in v2016? Quite strange.

TIFF files also are supporting layered CMYK file with transparency. I barely use PSD, but ITFF.

I thought about that, but it was always hit and miss with transparent TIFFs and QXP for me.

Has it improved since version 8.x?

I was working today with this TIFF file in QXP v. 8.5.1 (Win).
Above: lyered TIFF in a "none color background" picture box, without clipping.
Below: the same TIFF placed with clipping using an Alpha channel saved within PS.
Some TIFFs with drop shadows might create problems (but this is also the case with PSD files I guess).

Max, I think OP was using PSD files because he didn't have to worry about clipping paths or alpha channels. He probably switched to PNGs because you can have a transparent background with a PNG.

Going in and applying an alpha channel to an exising PSD file adds a couple of extra steps where using the PNG does not.

That's why I suggested a Photoshop PDF. It will retain the transparency as well as the CMYK colorspace and OP won't have to apply a clipping path or alpha channel.

Of course you are right Erik, unflattened PDFs are working well.
As a matter of fact I choose a file type depending on how complex it is. I know from my co-workers, there are a lot of user who are not very happy to create alpha masks in PS. ;)

Yea, I just started resaving the .psd files as Photoshop .pdf and it seems to help. I've just got literally thousands of files and it seems a pain to have to do that each and every time.

Hi all,

the PSD issues have been fixed with the latest QuarkXPress 2017 update (December Update, internal version number 13.1.1), which we released today.
