Quark 7 to 16

We are upgrading shortly and we currently use a few Apple Macs and a server where all our photos are kept ( we are a property company and keep all our brochures on the server with the locations of all our pictures for the brochures stored in those folders )

Once we upgrade will Quark 16 Automatically remember where these are stored or will I have to manually show quark where they are at again?

We have over 1000 properties and I really dont fancy the idea of when we come to print our old brochures that I have to manually show quark where these pictures are at for over 1000 brochures.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Champers,

it should of course work.

Why don't you try the Test Drive please and see whether it actually does?

Thanks but the problem is we are upgrading our apple macs as well as they are currently only 10.4.11 and unsupported for Quark 16 so we really need a solid yes or no.

Im hoping that once we upgrade our macs and Quark that I can open an old brochure and print without having to search for the photos all again to show quark where they are?
Thanks

Do you really mean OS X 10.4?

Thanks
Matthias

Yip 10.4 indeed :o , I have been tasked with upgrading our hardware and software and its mostly for Quark that we are upgrading so I need to make sure that when we get our new Macs and upgrade to the 2016 version that I wont have to look for the location of the photos and that Quark 16 will remember where the location of the photos are as in the current version of 7 that we are using.

Occasionally we may need to look for a photo as its location has been changed as if we print with the picture missing its not great quality and the colours are very flat looking, so you can imagine if I need to look for 1000s of photos individually.

I need to be sure that this isnt the case.

Thanks for you rresponses.

Hi Champers,

the last version of QuarkXPress to support OS X 10.4 was QuarkXPress 8, released 2008. Apple released OS X 10.4 in 2005, so over 12 years ago.

No current version of QuarkXPress runs on OS X 10.4, sorry.

Or am I misunderstanding you and you want to upgrade QuarkXPress to 2016/2017 and at the same time upgrade your OS X to at least 10.10?

Thanks
Matthias

I am upgrading our Macs to the latest iMac (current iMac is 10.4) and in doing so the current Quark 7 we are using will not run. Which is why we need Quark 16.
Thanks

Hi Champers,

ok, understood.

QuarkXPress 2017 is the newest, even better than QuarkXPress 2016. Both run fine on the latest MacOS (Sierra).

As I said, in theory there should not be any need to update images as long as the path will stay the same. However Apple has made many changes in AFP and SMB since 10.4. So I cannot guarantee you that there is no glitch, though I am not aware of any issues. Any other statement wouldn't be professional and using a crystal ball ;-)

That's why using a test version to see whether it will work is the best way to find out.

Thanks
Matthias

Thanks for your help, one final thing can you confirm for me. We are using templates for our Estate Agent brochures (1000s of them) and they have all been made up in Quark 7, if we go for Quark 16/17 will these be able to open and edit with no issues with them being originally made up in version 7, i really dont want to have to convert each of them individually.

So I am hoping that I can just open them with no issues in the new Quark.

I will use the trial version once we get our new macs but for the meantime I have to rely in your expertise and knowlege to answer my questions.

many thanks

About the only thing that ever messed up my upgrades of anything when templates and images were concerned were concurrent (or subsequent) upgrades to the server where names etc., were altered. I no longer work off a server being a single person shop and no longer want the hassle so I don't know how much a hassle it is these days if servers change--but I cannot imagine it is automagically resolved. There are discreet names of servers/paths used. A good IT department can mitigate the problems one will experience, though.

What made our transitions to a new server easier/smoother was having both the old and new servers running concurrently and using Collect for Output on the former server and saving to the new server, then opening that on the new server. It's a lot of repetitive work. If server names/paths can be replicated, it was always a smooth transition.
