QXP2016 vs QXP2017 vs ID CC2018 - speed

Post by Jiri Melnicky » 28 Feb 2018, 11:31

I bought QXP2017 mainly because of the Transparency feature, which is finally working very well. Unfortunately I am very disappointed at the speed of the program. Changing the font in one column takes up to 5 seconds! In QXP9 the change is immediate, change takes about 1 second in QXP2016. Also, mouse scrolling between pages is very slow. Almost does not help even pressing the Alt key. I say, do I have an outdated computer? I've installed the trial version of InDesign CC2018 today. How's the competition? I will open the QXD document in InDesign via the markzware. Font change is almost immediate, as in QXP9. I will mark all the text frames on the page and change the font in all frames at once (QXP is still a dream only). The change is almost immediate. Something's wrong here! Will QuarkXPress 2018 be even slower than version 2017? In ID, you can adjust the settings so that the program works faster, and you do not set anything in Quark. This is really not a good way!

I completely agree - QXP2017 is so slow for me as to be unusable - one document takes 40 seconds just to 'go to' a page!!!

I believe it is to do with image rendering - QXP2017 displays all images at high resolution but if you have lots of images in a document (for example a catalogue) then the cache cannot cope.

I am extremely disappointed with QXP2017 - I was forced to upgrade QXP9.5 because I had to upgrade my OS to Sierra, but I've used QXP since version 4 using mainly the same documents (catalogues updated yearly etc since 2004) and never had so many issues with slow speed, I spend so much time just waiting for QXP2017 to zoom in or move to a new page or scroll down.

Quark Support don't think there is an issue and their solution is to export all images from each document to a lower resolution - I have 500 images in 10 catalogues, so they want me to make 5000 images just to get QXP to work properly!

I am really hoping that QXP2018 handles images much better - I do not really understand the need for displaying such high resolutions as most designers would make images edits in Photoshop or Illustrator.

To make things worse there is no option to display the images in low resolution as there used to be in older versions.

Hi Jiri Meinicky,

Thank you for contacting Quark and sharing the feedback.

Kindly provide your machine for WebEx session to investigate the issue.

Kindly send the details to apalaniappan@quark.com

Thanks

I too am debating whether to avoid moving on to QXP 2018 as things seem to have been slowing down steadily with successive recent versions. I look back on version 9 as "peak Quark". Version 10 was a horrible experience for me and I ended up barely using it at all; 2015 was OK, and 2016 was bearable. But 2017 seems to have been a step backwards. In particular, saving files sometimes takes for ever. For example, saving a 16-page A5 document after making a few changes yesterday took 57 seconds. It may not sound much, but it feels like it when you're sitting drumming your fingers and struggling to meet a deadline.

Would it be reasonable to expect 2018 will mark an improvement in this respect? Or misguided optimism?

Hello, I have the same slow Quark 2017 issue.
In 7-day test drive and next 1 week after purchase was all OK,
but now is it a big trouble.

Please work with us to find out why this is happening.

I cannot reproduce it on my machines and also most people on Facebook do not experience this. We did see this with certain Font Management XTensions, so if you are not using that, please work with our team to get this analyzed.

Thanks
Matthias

Dear Matthias,
i dont use Font Management XTensions.

But i think, i found the steps to reproduce.
- use larger Adobe Illustrator backgroung with simple gradient mesh (in my case 50x70cm size)
- the gradient mesh is from CMYK 0/0/7/7 over CMYK 0/0/10/7 to CMYK 0/0/0/0
- save it from Illustrator as .ai with PDF-compatibility option
- place this file in 100% size in empty document in Quark as page background (please do NOT fit size to smaller image)
- type some text over this image.
- duplicate this page
- zoom in document to 800%
- try select a word and change one letter or scrolling between pages (booth is very slow with lags)

Workaround which helped me is rasterize this AI image at 300dpi Photoshop, and save it as TIFF. Then is Quark again fast.
Any work with larger page size PDFs with gradient is very slow allso on import...

Dear Quark developers. PLEASE re-enable the "rough previews" (or "Fast previews") option in the Quark document view options.

(In Adobe Indesign is still possibility switch between Fast display (Gray images) / Typical display (Rough previews) / HighQuality display (slow as Quark - but in Quark is not switching to rough previews))

Have a nice day, and fast Quark... :-) Tomas

Hi Tomas,

thank you for the steps to recreate, we will test them.

In the past we have seen Font Management applications and even Virus Checker applications slow down QuarkXPress and we are connecting to each individual user reporting this to find out the cause. So far they have been different causes and we are addressing them as quickly as possible.

Will get back to you once we have analyzed your scenario.

Thanks
Matthias
