HAVE AN IDML that DOES NOT import CORRECTLY?

Post by Matthias Guenther (Quark) » 22 Jan 2018, 17:15

Hi,

if you have tested IDML Import in QuarkXPress 2017 January 2018 Update and it does not import correctly, then please post the IDML here. Or send it to me via private message.

We will analyze it and see whether we can improve the IDML Import.

Thanks
Matthias

QXP doesn't import IDML files exported by CS4. If the files are opened and saved in CC2018, no problem. It's necessary to guarantee compatibility with IDML files created by CS4, CS5 etc. I have already sent a couple of files to Mathias.

Hi Pedrober,

the files you sent me contained corrupt document preferences, so let's first find out whether repairing your InDesign preferences solves this.

Her's how: https://indesignsecrets.com/rebuilding- ... rences.php

Thanks

Thank you very much for your answer. I deleted ID preferences, I opened the IDML files and exported them again. No luck. QXP refused to import the IDML file. Afterwards, I opened the original ID file and I created a new IDML file. No luck. I'll send the new file to you, just to verify that it's OK.

Hi Pedrober,

I tried your IDML and it doesn't open for me either.

I resaved it with InDesign CS6 and now it works fine. So it seems that it is not the InDesign versions causing this.

We will analyze it and get back to you via Facebook, as it's not very efficient to respond at two places simultaneously.

Thanks
Matthias

may be wrong but didn't CS4 save idml for opening in CS3, so would be different idml than CS5 and later would save?

CS3 didn't have IDML, back then it was INX.

Hi Matthais
I may not have the latest OS but I can usually get the antiques going.
Fired up an old copy CS4 and was surprised that you can Export as INX or IDML, thing is CS4 was designed to backsave as INX (for CS3). Before CS5 came out what would be the point of IDML for CS4 ?.
CS4 needs to open IDML from future versions but only needs to open INDD from itself or earlier versions.
Because CS5 CS5.5 CS6 CC etc etc can all open INDD saved CS4 files, the IDML option in CS4 seems very redundant, behind the scenes if Adobe chose to write INDD into the CS4 IDML no one would ever know?

Sure Exporting as INX or IDML is an option to clean up bloated or corrupt INDD but its a weird one for CS4, for example I don't recall Quark having a feature to Export in a format for future versions, unless you count the Document Converter program.

Incidentally there are currently a few people finding it difficult to open CC2018 generated IDML in earlier versions of InDesign, I've not come across anything myself but Its worrying for me because I need CC2014 until I get reliable updates for my Plug-Ins.

I would think the point of Adobe including export of IDML is it is tied to the import process internally and related to document clean-up. Yes, INX may have done the same thing at the time (dunno as I never used it), but at the time of CS4, IDML was going to be the future for Adobe.

Hello,

I too have not been able to successfully import any .IDML files into QuarkXPress 2017. I tried several different documents. I generated them using the most current InDesign version. Have you any suggestions?

Thank you,

Gigi
