Is it faster than the disappointingly slow 2017

Post by MarkyBoy » 03 May 2018, 09:00

I've been using Quark since version 4(!) and I have to say QXP2017 imo is extremely slow compared to 9.5 (the version i 'upgraded' from).

It takes a long time to open files, can't cope with lots of large image files, gives erratic pdf outputs - generally very poor compared to 9.5 in terms of performance or the way it handles memory... I am convinced the problems are to do with image rendering.

So.. wil 2018 be faster and more stable, I guess we will have to wait, it's just a shame 9.5 did not run on Mac Sierra otherwise I wouldn't spend a quarter of my day looking at a spinning ball in Quark!

Hi Marky,

most of our customer experience QuarkXPress 2017 as extremely fast. So please work with support to see what's causing this.

Do you use a Font Management XT by any chance?

Thanks
Matthias

Thanks Matthias

I am not using any Font XT.

I have been in contact with support and their best solution is to export all the images from with Quark so that they are a smaller size - of course this is not a solution as any image is used in several documents and needs to be centrally maintained.

We tried many things with Quark support but this issue could not be resolved.

For example, for one client, I have ten catalogues each with approximately 400 images each image original is about 16MB.

In all previous version 9.5 and backwards, I could open all ten catalogues simultaneously and work between them all... In 2017, I can just about have one open and even then it is very slow to move around pages, zoom in and do just about anything. The issue is that QXP2017 is trying to display all the images at high resolution and the cache cannot cope. In 2017 there is no option to display images at lower resolution as there was in previous versions - not that I ever needed to do that as the other versions could cope easily.

it is very frustrating and has meant that all of my work takes me much longer - read costs me more time and money!

Mark

Hi Mark,

can you send me the ticket ID please, as that's not common.

If yo do not use any Font XT, then maybe a virus checker? I remember several people reporting that this caused a slow down in QuarkXPress for them.

Coincidentally, just today a QuarkXPress user posted in the Facebook Group: "Quark is better and faster. I handle large projects in both and scrolling through big documents in ID is horribly slow in comparison."

So hopefully we can resolve that for you too.

And yes, QX2018 is even faster than QX2017.

Thanks
Matthias

Thanks Matthias, I appreciate that - I shared the project and all image files with support and never really got anywhere.

The ticket ID is 84582.

I think a virus would be unlikely, I have no issues with any other software and if I leave the files open in Quark for several hours then the speed does improve, so I am convinced it is an image cache issue. It's like Quark takes ages and ages to cache all the images for a project and then once it has done this things improve, but this takes literally a couple of hours!

Yeah, that'd be a strange virus… ;-)

With virus checker I meant something like Avira (which was causing the slowness).

Thanks
Matthias

Hi Matthias

I find no improvement with this issue in QXP2018.

Could the problem be with eps images somehow? I use a lot of eps illustrations and I find that if I delete them then the performance improves proportionally to how many eps images I delete! Are eps images handled differently to say version 9.5 which did not have this very slow performance with eps files?

Can you suggest what to do?

Thanks
Mark

Can you send me a Collect-For-Output via private message please?

Thanks
Matthias
