Getting embarrassed by hyphenation

Post by Quarkhorse » 08 Jan 2020, 16:10

Hey all!

In recent months when book proofs come back to me for correcting, I'm noticing quite alot of flags/edits marked for bad breaks/incorrect hyphenations of words. What might have changed lately to allow them? For example, QXP hyphenated "children" as:

child-
ren

rather than the correct

chil-
dren

If there's no easy answer to this, may I pose a followup question?

97% of my clients (American book publishers) follow Merriam-Webster for hyphenation of words. Would it be possible that QuarkXPress, when English is set as language, do the same?

With thanks,
JC

Hmm. I cannot get the bad break on children you are.

I've had X number of words that have bad breaks over the years. If I recall, all but some had discretionary hyphens in the Word manuscripts. I don't remember what the problem/solution was for the remaining ones (too long ago). I likely did hyphenation exceptions for them--in fact, if I add "children" to an exception and add the hyphen between d and r, guess where the word children breaks...
