About Space (Part 2)

Post by urs7000 » 05 Jun 2020, 04:18

Hello again,
I create my own font for underline words and groups of words. For this I had to create an underline for the the spaces (U+0020, U+2005 and so on) as well.
Now I have some problems with it in QXP 2019 and 2020, macOS 10.14.6 German:
• I will get a gap between to words with U+2005 () in a line with alignment left or forced.
• I will get a gap between to words with normal space (U+0020) in a line with alignment forced.
• When I put the glyph U+2005 from the window 'glyphs' into my text, than there is no underline for this glyphs. :-(

I try the same in InDesign CC 2020, and in all cases there is no gap. So my font is ok, but there is a problem in QXP.

Here are two screenshots a made about this:

Any ideas how I can get rid of the gaps?

Greetings, J.

The QXP example is using its own font for the space(s). That's why the space character in your example is displaying the symbols it is.

As for ID, dunno. But it's possible its optical kerning is making an adjustment.

Hello, Mike,
I have tried everything that was possible with Kerning and so on. I couldn't get the gap to go away. As a stopgap solution I made the Space U+2005 much wider and lo and behold, the problem is gone. :-)

Have a nice Sunday,
Jens
