Fill Frame Proportionally

Post by ben nevis » 20 Aug 2015, 04:14

There seem to be limited ways of altering the size of a photo in a picture box.

One glaring omission from Quark is the 'Fill Frame Proportionally' option of your rival.

Very often the size/proportions of a picture box are determined by the layout, so 'Scale Picture To Box' is no good because unless the photo and the picture box have the same proportions two sides of the box will not be filled. 'Stretch Picture to Fit Box' is no good either because this distorts the photos. There can't be many situations where it is desirable to distort photos. So, as far as I'm concerned, the only useful option is the one that is missing - 'Fill Frame Proportionally'. Call it 'Stretch Picture to Fill Box' or 'Fill Box Proportionally' if you must.

Is it time yet for another QuarkXPress wishlist survey?

Yeah, I find this annoying as well.

There is an AppleScript to do this.

What about "Scale Picture to Box" (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F) ? ;)

If I need a quick solution, I use some consecutive shortcuts (I'm on Win, so look for the corresponding shortcuts on Mac, see the attachement):

1. Ctrl+Shift+Alt+F for adjust the picture to the size of the picture box.
2. Alt+S, then B for fitting the box to picture.

Maybe it is quicker and better to import picture by Ctrl+E, without previously selecting frame, and then adjust it as you wish.

I don't really get what you're after. If I get it right, then what I do in such cases is Shift-Option-Cmd-F to fit the picture to the box and get it centered. Then, Shift-Option-Cmd-drag the handles of the pic to maximize it so the whole box is filled. There is also a chain besides W and H in the measurement palette so that proportions of the box are constrained. If you drag a handle then it grows up proportionaly. Another chain constrains pic props. I think what you're after is really one shortcut away and very quick and easy to do. Unless I'm missing sth?

I adapted an old AppleScript that worked fine until QXP9 to work with 10 and 11. I know almost nothing about AppleScript so there should be a lot of room for improvement.

That should at least make clear what exactly OP is trying to achieve ;-)

Nevertheless, I would really appreciate a native QXP command to do the same thing.

Hi inflector,

Thank you a lot for updating and sharing this script!
I think, it will be useful until Quark implements this function.

Regards,
Johannes
