Outline type

Post by Jim8Davis » 23 Aug 2018, 13:52

When converting a typeface to outline is there a way to keep the outline black but fill in the inside of the letters with a color?

A font has no internal outline to begin with. But you can add a stroke to the text after it has been converted and have a different color than the inside part of the text.

One can also add a stroke to live text, but as that stroke only can have a "middle" position, once the weight of the outline begins to get heavy enough details of the type will become increasingly obscured.

Thanks for the answer but unfortunately I don't know what "adding a stroke" means. And obviously don't know how to do it.

Here's a screen shot.

If you convert type to "Boxes"(curves) in Q, the outline, once it is of a certain weight (thickness) overwhelms the characters, closing off some details of the font.

If you leave the type "Live"(so is still editable as text), you can add the same weight of stroke (line weight/thickness) and it is a better look.

The text at the top has been converted to boxes (curves) and is no longer editable text. Most people when using this method use a copy without a stroke that is positioned on top of this kind of outlined type so the font details are not obscured.

Mike - Thanks for the input and the screen capture. However, when I hover over the box that you call "Text Fill" my screen says "Text Color" and if I change that color from black, it just changes the color of the outline. My line thickness on the outline type is ok. But I am unable to get the inside of the type, which is now white, to change to 15% black, or any other color.

I left the "Text Color" black and with the text I am trying fill highlighted, I changed the "Stroke" box to 15% black but nothing happened.

Mike - the word products in the screen grab is what I am trying to fill.

Hi Jim,

For text that has been converted to curves/outlines/boxes, you should be able to just select it and use the Colors panel.

If that doesn't work, would you consider making a zip file and uploading it here?

Here is the file. It's very small. See note on document.

Hi Jim,

I've attached a ZIP with a revised document. I swapped out the font to Arial--I was too lazy to load Helv.

What I did and how to make changes is in a text box with screen shots.
