Moving from Mac to PC...

Post by PrintingServices » 18 Dec 2018, 07:41

Hi there
The organisation I work for as a Graphic Designer is forcing me to move from my beloved Mac to a PC (something to do with PSN compliancy - or somesuch spurious reason).

OK, I can't currently print from the Mac (have to export PDF to a USB stick, then take that to a PC that is allowed on the network and print from there using Acrobat!), nor do I have access to network folders, wired broadband, or have external backups made etc. etc.
Yes, I can see that it does make sense to have a PC instead of the Mac.

I can also forsee countless problems in the transition...

Has anyone here made a similar move? I worry about font compatibility (some old documents use ancient legacy fonts! This department had artworks dating back decades), plus I worry about all sorts of stupid stuff. Like the loss of Time Machine, the quality of the keyboard and screen, about whether my specialist mouse will be compatible...

Frankly I could do with some guidance as to what machine and screens might be good to look into (replacing a 2018 28" iMac). I'm not expert in PCs - always preferring my good old reliable (mostly) Mac equipment at every turn. But I do prefer to spec equipment myself rather than relying on IT to come up with something.

I'm using Quark for the majority of work, plus all the regular Adobe stuff, Microsoft Office (when I have to!), plus a few oddities (most of which do have PC equivalents).

Any had any Quark issues with PCs?
Suggestions or guidance is always appreciated!

Hi PS,

QuarkXPress works almost the same on Mac and Windows. There are a few differences that are dictated by the operating system, for example, Windows has one qualifier less than Mac. And there are some historic differences. All in all you'll be up to speed fast I'd assume.

Your license is also platform independent, so you can use it on either Mac or PC.

TrueType fonts and OpenType fonts will be compatible, Type-1 fonts will most likely cause issues.

Hope this helps

biggest issue will be fonts, there are Mac Applications that can convert Mac Fonts to ttf for PC, its not a perfect solution and you'll probably still need theUSB (till your IT Dept ban that too  ). On the Plus side Microsoft Office docs will open up and save more predictably :D

Dell Monitors are in general fine, if you want one for pro colour its worth spending more to get larger percentage of AdobeRGB coverage. You can buy PCs with similar i3 i5 i7 i9 processors to Mac and go for a discrete Graphics card
